KIDS OUT 'GIVING TREE' INTIATIVE

This Christmas at Deptford Green, we are supporting The Kids Out ‘Giving Tree’ Initiative, which encourages those more fortunate to buy a toy for a disadvantaged child, who may otherwise receive very little – or in some cases – nothing at all at Christmas. The DG Giving Tree (situated in Student Services) is decorated with 50 tags which include the names of children in refuge and the gift that they would love to receive from Father Christmas. If your family would like to support this project, your child can come to Student Services and identify a tag and reserve it. They will need to note the present requested. Please then buy the gift from a shop, wrap & label it and bring to school.

The deadline is Friday 13th December. Alternatively, you can visit the Kids Out gift shop and choose a gift for another child in need and buy it directly where it will then be delivered alongside other gifts for children in refuge at Christmas. Click HERE if you want to do so.

We are thrilled to announce that tickets are available to purchase for the DG 2024 Christmas Showcase: 'To Thine Own Self Be True'.

Doors open at 5.45pm with festive food from our amazing Food Tech students and Mr Djordjevic and refreshments on sale (hosted by Friends of Deptford Green). This will be followed by music and dance performances plus a special performance of William Shakespeare's Hamlet! The show itself starts at 6.15pm. Tickets are £2 (£1 concessions & students).

Friends of Deptford Green will kindly be hosting this event. 

We wanted to give you the opportunity to buy some of the coats particularly that have been donated and have accumulated in Lost & Found, so that when the cold really starts kicking in, you may find a coat so that your children are warm on their journeys to and from school.

PLEASE remember that DG is a CASHLESS SCHOOL, and it would be helpful if you plan on buying a coat or several items,  you bring a bag for life with you to carry it home in.  Also, a reminder that we only have what we are given so we don't have everything in stock - I say this so you won't be disappointed if you turn up to find we don't have what will fit your child. We do have LOADS of shirts and trousers.  Other items are limited size-wise.

CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH WEEK 2025

3 - 9 February 2025

In 2025, the week’s focus will be KNOW YOURSELF GROW YOURSELF. We want to equip and empower children, young people, and the adults who surround them to embrace self-awareness and explore what it means to them.

Each year, Place2Be experts create fun and engaging resources for families, parents and carers to take part in Children's Mental Health Week. This year we're partnering with Here4You, supported by The Walt Disney Company and the Inside Out 2 characters to explore our theme Know Yourself, Grow Yourself.

We had a WONDERFUL event for our Class of 2024! It was so lovely to see them all and catch up with a cohort who are very much missed.

Y10 Computer Science Trip to ADA College

On Friday 6th December, our Y10 Computer Science students attended an interactive trip to ADA College. This visit was designed to help students explore the world of technology and develop a deeper understanding of the various career opportunities available in the tech industry.

During the visit, students participated in hands-on activities, workshops, and discussions, all aimed at raising awareness of post-16 options in the technology sector. They learnt about the diverse range of career pathways available, from software development to cybersecurity and beyond.

This trip was an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable insights into the growing field of technology, helping them make informed decisions about their future academic and career choices.  We  hope this enriching experience for our students will spark their interest in exploring further studies and careers in tech.

Here is a selection of the feedback from the students about their experience of the trip:

Hauwa: “I learnt that there aren’t enough females in the computer science related fields”

Habib: “I learnt that there are many pathways into tech and you don’t have to be good at coding”

Sola: “ I learnt that there are three sections in the tech career pathway; Innovative, Creative and Pioneer.”

Yaquub: “It opened our eyes to the opportunities in the college”

Vlad: “I learnt that are many pathways at ADA and I want to go there for Sixth Form”

Yusuuf: “One thing I learnt is about the T-levels and how they are equivalent to multiple A-levels”

Bailey: “I learnt about the different options in Computer Science and how to get a job in the Tech industries”

Kevin: “I learnt about the different grades you need to get into the college”

DT NEWS

Y8 DT TOTE BAGS - THE FINISHED PRODUCT AS PROMISED!

The first rotation in DT is now complete and so are the tote bag Y8's have been working on. Once students finished applying their embroidery stitches, they sewed up the seam allowances on their bags and attached the straps.

Y7 have finished making their animal snappers! These have been inspired by nature and they use mechanisms to create the movement. A range of hand tools were used plus the workshop machines.

On our Y9 Discovery Days (Tuesdays) DT students have been designing and making lights using acrylic plastic, recycled oak, USB leads and LED modules. They have also used 3D printing for the shades. Only 2 Y9's were brave enough to be in the photo, Albert and Meta. Well done you two but also well done to everyone working hard and producing excellent pieces of work.

Y7 FOOTBALL NEWS

Emily writes:

Our match against Hatcham ended with an amazing 2-0 victory to us. This result moves us to the next round of the cup! The goals were scored by Valerie -Joy and Elspeth our outstanding wingers. The player voted Player of the Match by  Hatcham was Anastasia and our Deptford Green player of the match was our great goal keeper Ruthie who saved so many amazing shots!

Ms Stanghon said; 'The year 7 girls remain unbeaten after beating Hatcham 2-0. They were all outstanding!'  Well done girls.

Y11 MFL 'CAREERS IN LANGUAGES TRIP' TO ST DUNSTAN'S COLLEGE

Ms Calvert said: Students were a credit to the school - behaved fantastically and really engaged in exploring the different higher education and career options associated with languages (and with getting the free stuff!). Chelsea, Sky and other students  won prizes too! We've been invited back by their Headteacher for some French and Spanish A Level Taster sessions they are putting on especially for Deptford Green!

Applications for Charter North Dulwich and Charter East Dulwich sixth forms are open, and the deadline is the 20^th of December.

Mulberry UTC is inviting Deptford Green students in Y9, Y10 and Y11 to their open evening on Thursday, 16^th January 2025 from 4:30pm-6:30pm.

UTCs are schools you can enrol at to start in Y10 or Y12 and work with industry partners to ensure employer-led learning.

Mulberry UTC in East London offers Creative and Digital Media, Performing and Production Arts, Business and Health Sciences, we look forward to sharing opportunities with students in your school.

INVITATION TO ADA CAREERS IN TECH WEBINAR:

ADA, The National College for Digital Skills, invites students and their families to a webinar on January 22^nd 2025 from 6:00 PM to 6:45 PM.

This session is designed to provide young people and their parents and carers with valuable insights into the various career opportunities within the tech sector.

Webinar Content:

Getting into tech doesn’t have to mean learning how to code. In this session, we will explore the wide range of tech, digital, and data roles, and examine key skills for success in tech careers, such as creativity, curiosity, collaboration, and problem-solving. In fact, 90% of the tech workforce does not have a computer science or IT-related degree, so what are the other routes into tech?

We will also look at the trends in tech and how they will influence the jobs of the future.

FAMILY HUBS

Did you know Lewisham have family hubs, and one is very near the school?

Lewisham Family Hubs are a place you can visit should you want advice, support or engage with services they offer.

The Hubs will provide space to access support from professionals such as early years practitioners, health visitors, midwives, speech and language therapists and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) advisors.  They also welcome people from the community to set up their own groups or activities within Family Hub buildings.

An example of some of their services are:

• Support for parents with managing finances and getting back into work or training
• Youth activities for young people aged 11 to 19
• Help with baby and child development
• A range of child and family health activities including dental advice and emotional wellbeing.

We have a family hub close by at Clyde Nursery building, Alverton Street, SE8 5NH

We are in the midst of the national White Ribbon 16 Days campaign, an international campaign for the elimination of gender-based violence. Lewisham is running a comprehensive campaign to raise awareness of violence against women and girls (VAWG) in the borough, signposting residents to the help available and to educate residents and partners about different strands of VAWG and types of domestic abuse. We’ve published information about the events  happening and sources of support.
