Safeguarding Statement
Deptford Green School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare and safety of all students and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We strive to ensure that consistent and effective safeguarding procedures are in place to support families, students and staff at school.
The Designated Safeguarding Lead is Emily Stanghon (Acting Deputy Head Teacher). Our Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads are Lynn Ascott and Amy Coffey. We also have Pastoral Leaders who have Level 3 Safeguarding training.
Deptford Green School has policies and procedures in place to deal effectively with child protection and safeguarding issues, which include tackling radicalisation and extremism, together with recording and monitoring processes.
To promote a safe environment for students we employ a strict selection and recruitment policy which includes all statutory checks on staff and regular volunteers including Enhanced DBS (disclosure and barring service) checks.
All staff are trained to a level appropriate to their safeguarding responsibilities. Other safeguarding training is attended by all staff and governors. The training is monitored and comprehensive records kept by the DSL.
All members of our community are vigilant and concerns are immediately passed on to the Safeguarding Team. Referrals are logged and monitored to make sure that they are followed up immediately and appropriately.
Student attendance is monitored closely and concerns are shared with parents/carers, Lewisham Local Authority, Social Care, The Virtual School and the school Safeguarding team. Deptford Green School works effectively with all other agencies and parents/carers when necessary to safeguard young people.
Contextualising Safeguarding
We recognise our role in keeping pupils safe beyond the school gates and work closely our pupils to ensure they are aware of the risk in the community and online. We work with our parents and carers to ensure families are educated about the dangers of mobiles, social media and group chats. Please click on the online safety tab to access factsheets and support for keeping your child safe online. We ensure staff are on duty within our local community before and at the end of the day. We regularly survey students and run focus groups to find out if there are any areas in school, online or in the local community where students feel unsafe and then we take actions to reduce harm once the concern has been identified. We train all staff on a range of different safeguarding issues to ensure they can identify indicators; they know how to deal with safeguarding incidents effectively and report their concern to access further support.
If you have any concerns about your child, another student or a member of staff at Deptford Green School please do not hesitate to contact the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or the Deputy Safeguarding Leads who will be able to provide you with the best advice and help, whilst keeping appropriate degree of confidentiality. See contact information below.
