A welcome back to the whole DG community after the two-week break!
Last week the students settled incredibly well. The Y11 students have approached their PPE’s with real commitment and tenacity, which is wonderful to see.
We welcomed a new School Improvement Partner to the school on Wednesday and I took him on a tour of the school. We went to every single lesson that was running and he was really impressed, as was I, to see every student, without fail, fully engrossed in their learning. We observed so many different, exciting and engaging activities in classrooms and students impressed him with how polite, warm and welcoming they were. I am one super proud Headteacher!
Huge shout out to the Y7 Girls football team, coached by Ms Stanghon, who stormed to victory, winning 4-1 against Bacons College. Great work ladies!
As we enter Anti-Bullying week with Odd Socks Day on Tuesday, today we also took time to remember those that gave their lives to enable us and many other generations to live ours free from conflict by observing a minutes' silence on Monday 11th at 11am. Students were thoughtful and respectful and took the time to reflect on this important event.
Mr Charles will be running the London Marathon, that most amazing event for Cancer Research next year, and we shall be hosting a series of events across the year to support with the fundraising. This is certainly no mean feat! I ran the London Marathon myself 10 years ago and whilst it was a huge challenge, it was by far one of my biggest achievements ever, and I am sure many of our students will be there on the day to support and cheer Mr Charles on.
As ever we continue to provide a diverse range of opportunities within the arts with a Matilda the Musical visit alongside trips to the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize at The National Portrait Gallery and a trip to the V&A textiles exhibition being offered this week alone!
A date for your diaries: I shall be hosting a 'Crafternoon Tea' at 2pm on Tuesday 10th December. Come and join us in creating and making some lovely festive decorations whilst we have an informal chat together. If you would like to attend, please contact Ms Heiser: email aheiser@deptfordgreen.co.uk
Have a wonderful week ahead everyone.
Emma Thurston

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT SCHOOL?
CULTURAL EVENING 2024
On Wednesday 16th October we celebrated our Cultural Evening in style. We had Uche from the class of 2016 who gave a talk along with Ms Ahmed and Louis, class of 2023 who rapped for us! We had some wonderful dancing, music and of course the much anticipated Cultural Catwalk to everyone's excitement! Enjoy some photos of the evening here...
Mr Josephs was so happy he got in there twice!
Thanks to everyone who helped organise this wonderful event and also a big shout out to the FODG parents who helped run the Bar & Refreshments
Y8 DT UPDATE FROM MS EDY
For the textiles rotation in DT, Y8's are designing and making tote bags based on West African and William Morris prints.
Students had to come up with 4 design ideas based on these influences, then choose one on which to base their bag construction. Students first drew their designs on canvas then added embroidery stitches. The bags will be completed in 3 weeks time and we'll show you the results.
Thanks Ms Edy and well done Y8's! We look forward to seeing the completed bags...
And from Mr Curran:
These are some photos of the Y9's (current Y10) who took part in the architecture project 'Big Build' at The Royal Albert Hall in June. These have just been released by Grimshaw Architects.
The project was run by Urban Learners and Grimshaw Architects and involved 8 schools across London. The project took a year to complete. The project involved designing an installation for one of 4 artists, in our case the well-known organist Anna Lapwood.
Well done to everyone involved and thanks Mr Curran!
DEBATE MATE AT WESTMINSTER!
It's back! Our third consecutive year taking part in this fabulous competition. Our students are ready to participate and perhaps beat the best at their game. What is the game?
Debate Mate of course!
We went to the launch party on Wednesday. It was at the Emmanuel Centre next to Parliament Square. Oh yeah! We saw Princess Anne. She drove past with her entourage. ‘Splendid.’
It was fun to see several members of the club from different schools. The showcase debate was entertaining with lots of passive language. The motion was "Students should be able to create/design their own uniform.”
Opposing teams debated this motion with passion and rigour. We were amongst the audience alongside hundreds of students from schools all across London. The floor was invited to ask the debaters key questions. These questions were designed to rebut or expose contradictions in the debater's arguments.
The best question was to be awarded a £50 voucher and guess what? Team DG did it! Anna in Y9 asked the most effective question and won the £50 voucher. What a good start to this term of debating. I have high hopes for Deptford Green this year. Well done Anna. AMAZING!
Thanks Mr Ramsay
Y7 GIRL'S FOOTBALL TEAM SHINES!
The Y7 girls were outstanding at the Millwall Under 13 Lewisham tournament last Thursday. They played against all Y8 teams at the competition. They won 1, drew 4 and only lost 1 game. They were achingly close to the final!
The photo below is Ruthie with the Millwall First team goalkeeper Lukas Jensen who played in goal for Millwall the previous night when they beat Leeds 1-0! Thank you Lukas and well done to everyone involved!
Also on Wednesday 6th November, the girls played against Bacons College. Below you will see Beth and Ruthie giving the captain's winning team talk before the match and then the girls carried Anastasia off the pitch at the end because she had scored a hat trick and the final photo is of the team celebrating the 1-4 win against a side who were a very good team and went 1-0 up to start. But our girls didn't let that stand! Well done to Anastasia and all of the team for a fantastic win! Come on DG!
Thanks Ms Stanghon
GREEN CAREERS WEEK @ DG
Thank you to all students, parents and staff who got involved in Green Careers Week.
Congratulations to Artin who was the first student to complete the Green Careers Treasure Hunt.
Artin in Y7, noticed links between what he studies in lesson and future jobs. He commented that “it was really interesting and useful to see how skills like teamwork are useful in different jobs and how people use Maths and Science at work and learn about different qualifications.”
We hope Green Careers Week sparked interesting career conversations between young people, and with family at home and with teachers in the classroom and highlighted how relevant our curriculum, GREAT values and LORIC skills are to future professional development, success, rewards and impact.

A MESSAGE OF THANKS & GREATFULNESS FROM MS TUMKEVICE
Dear DG Community,
I want to say thanks to each of you for your generous donations. Together, we raised £300, which went a long way towards supporting a school in Arusha, Tanzania. With your contributions, I was able to purchase essential supplies: 2 large carpets for the children to sit and play on, 120 exercise books, 100 pencils, 50 erasers, and 50 sharpeners. To support their meals, I also bought 10kg each of sugar, porridge, rice, and beans, 10 litres of cooking oil, a big bag of charcoal, and refilled a gas tank, 2 mattresses to provide a comfortable place for the youngest children to sleep.
This experience has been truly eye-opening. It reminded me of how fortunate we are to have quality education, everyday resources, and healthcare readily available. Your kindness has made a real difference, and the children and staff are incredibly grateful.
Thank you for helping to brighten their days and support their learning.
Ms Tumkevice

POLITE REMINDER FOR SCHOOL LIBRARY BOOKS
Dear Parents/Carers, PLEASE could you encourage your child/children to return their library books on time and not hold on to them to avoid getting a negative for not having a book with them. Students are waiting to borrow some of the books that are out on loan and as books are more expensive these days (along with everything else!) I have fewer copies of books on the shelves, so I would be grateful for your support in this. Thank you - Ms Walker
A message from Mr Bannon our new Deputy Designated Safeguarding and Attendance Officer:
Dear Parents/Carers,
As winter rolls around, we understand that it is inevitable your child may feel unwell. However, we want you to encourage your child to still attend school if they are well enough to do so. There is a clear, established link between attendance and children’s attainment, social development and outcomes.
We thought the following link may be helpful as guidance to help understand whether your child is too unwell to attend school. Click HERE
I also want to clarify the school’s stance on high temperatures, vomiting and diarrhoea.
High temperature – Please ensure you measure your child’s temperature and send the school a picture of the reading (without this we may not be able authorise the absence), the NHS class anything above 38c as a high temperature - click HERE
Vomiting and diarrhoea – Advice is to keep your child home for 48 hours after symptoms, this is for cases of illness that are communicable, e.g. seasonal flu. If your child has had food poisoning, an intolerance or an upset stomach, they are fine to attend school when their symptoms finish.
Thank you for your continuous support - Mr Bannon
