Welcome all to our second newsletter of the year in our new format. We hope you like it.
It has been a busy start to the year with our Open Season. We have welcomed a record number of Year 6 students and their families to our Open Mornings and Open Evening. The message is certainly getting out there and there is a real buzz of excitement about Deptford Green! Wehope to be full on first choice in September 2023 and to have a waiting list for the first time in many years. Thank you to all of our DG community. We certainly could not have moved the school on so well without all of your continued support.
The Year 11 information evening was well attended and parents were able to hear from the Head of English and Maths on ways to further support their child with their exam preparation and Mr Callaghan shared our excellent revision development offer.
This week we welcomed Year 7 parents to our Meet the Tutor event and I was delighted to see so many of you there. I know that lots of our Year 7's are very excited about the upcoming residential trip to Marchant's Hill. Let's see who is the muddiest at the end of the weekend! Watch this space for the evidence...
This week sees the launch of our rich offer and opportunities to celebrate Black History Month. As you will see from our poster later in the newsletter and its link to our website, we have a diverse range of activities both within and outside of the curriculum.

Our year 11's went through a rigorous selection process to be elected and they were all amazing! Eight of them were elected - sadly Campbell was away when we took this photo. Watch out in a later edition to see what they say about their individual roles. These are excellent DG students who have always been involved in school life and given of their free time to help our school community. Congratulations to all of them for their successful and well-deserved selection!

YEAR 11 OUT FOR THE DAY FOR TASTER SESSIONS AT POST 16+ PROVIDERS
On Thursday the whole of the Year 11 cohort were out getting a day in local colleges & sixth forms having taster classes in the subject of their choice. The response back from the external providers was so positive and students had a great day out with lots of ideas for their future choices. The thinking behind this day was to give our Y11 students a chance to experience the environment and a subject they may or may not have tried before.
Well done Y11 and all staff involved on a fantastic day out.
YEAR 11 INFORMATION EVENING: A REAL SUCCESS
On the evening of Thursday 29th October following on from a successful day out at various colleges for Post 16+ taster sessions, their parents & carers joined our Y11 students and Mr Conway (HOY), Mr Allen (SLT) and Ms Nembhard (Careers Coordinator), who took them through various key information about this 'all important' GCSE final year. Mr Callaghan also presented on revision strategies and the Heads of English and Maths presented too.
Thank you to all staff involved and to all parents/carers and students for coming and engaging in the process so well!

HEADS TOGETHER

Too often, people feel afraid to admit that they are struggling with their mental health. This fear of prejudice and judgement stops people from getting help and can destroyfamilies and end lives. Heads Together wants to help people feel much more comfortable with their everyday mental wellbeing and have the practical tools to support their friends and family.
Heads Together is a mental health initiative spearheaded by The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales, which combines a campaign to tackle stigma and change the conversation on mental health with fundraising for a series of innovative new mental health services. Black History Month 2022 from Young Minds...
October is Black History Month, a time dedicated to learning about Black British achievements and contributions to the UK’s history and culture. We feel it is also important to highlight the injustices and oppression faced by Black young people, which have a huge impact on mental health. Black young people are more likely to struggle with their mental health and face more barriers to accessing the right support. We won’t stand for this.
At YoungMinds, we’re on a mission to make sure all young people can get the mental health support they need, when they need it, no matter what. Through our End The Wait campaign, we’re we’re urging the government to recognise and address the injustices that Black young people face through its promised ten year mental health plan. We need the government to re-commit to this plan and for it to include commitments such as: a national network of Early Support Hubs (which are more likely to be used by Black young people than other services) and making it a requirement for schools to co-produce their behaviour policies with young people, including Black young people. We believe that these changes would go some way to improving the mental health experiences of Black young people in this country. But we also recognise that these commitments can only go so far and deeper change is needed to tackle the racism and discrimination that is built into our society.
