As we enter October after the wettest September on record, we do hope for some sunshine and warmth this month.
The rain however, has not dampened the spirits for the DG community and our young people have continued to shine every day, especially during Open Season whereby we welcomed over 800 families into our wonderful school and the feedback has been nothing less than outstanding. I would like to say a special thank you to the Y8 guides, Y7 speakers, Student Captains and other amazing students who helped out during our Open Evening. Finally, a big thank you to those wonderful parents who were our 'Parent Ambassadors' at all of the events, ready to answer questions from their DG Parental experience. Thank you also to you, our amazing families, who have obviously been spreading the good news about Deptford Green in our local community and beyond.
Discovery Day for Y9’s has got off to an amazing start; students are deeply engaged and immersed in creative learning opportunities across the day and have been enjoying learning new skills in photography, metalwork, dance and many other wonderful activities.
Many Y7 families took up the opportunity to meet with tutors last week and Y11 parents attended the GCSE information evening led excellently by Mr Callaghan. We are all in agreement that having parents and carers engaged in their child’s learning helps our young people to maximise their outcomes and enjoyment of school life. We have collected effort data on every year group, and it has been pleasing to see so many students with high effort grades across most subject areas.
As we look ahead to the last 3 weeks of this half-term (where has the time gone?) Y11’s are focussing on the upcoming PPE’s and the wealth of rich opportunities for Cultural Month begins this week, culminating in the fabulous event on Wednesday 16th October- I hope to see many of you there.
Attendance remains a key focus. Please ensure your child is in school every day and is making the most of the daily learning experiences on offer.
Enjoy the newsletter, there are many exciting things happening including Ms Tumkevice's volunteering opportunity in Tanzania no less!
Have a wonderful week ahead everyone...
Emma Thurston

INFORMATION FOR YEAR 7 PARENTS/CARERS
An introduction to Place2Be...
WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES PLACE2BE MAKE IN YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL?
Place2Be is a charity working in schools across the UK to improve the emotional wellbeing of children and young people.
HOW PLACE2BE WORKS
The Place2Be room is a place where young people can go to share their worries, through talking and creative work (when they don't feel like talking). Our team of counsellors helps young people find ways of coping with difficulties so that they can focus and be ready for learning and building friendships.
HOW WE HELP
We work with young people one-to-one, and in small groups. We offer regular support for those who will benefit from it the most. All students can seek support for help with friendship issues, school pressures and other worries. We accept referrals from students, parents and teachers.
FAMILIES
Parents and carers of young people in Place2Be schools can access free advice, resources and services as part of our support for the whole school. Learn more at:
The move to secondary school can be both exciting and worry-provoking for students.
As parents and carers, it can be hard to see our children caught up in the tension between these two very different feeling states.
If it is possible to find time in the evening routine, you might offer a short listening space to your child to check, 'How was your day?'. Listening in a calm way, without shielding young people from uncomfortable aspects of their school day can help them tolerate uncomfortable situations the next time something arises.

CAREERS: WHAT A DELIGHT!
Friday morning, Ejiro (DG Class of 2022) came back to Deptford Green to share his experience and encourage students to be their best self and make the most of all opportunities.
After his GCSEs, Ejiro was awarded a full Leathersellers Scholarship and attended Colfe’s Sixth Form, an independent school in Lee. He has now started a very competitive Engineering Degree Apprenticeship.
Along with Ms Kendrick from Colfe’s, Ejiro presented to Year 11 students on track to achieve top grades, what is on offer in the sixth form including small group teaching, careers support and expertise, mentoring and an incredible array of extra-curricular activities. Ejiro recounted some of the travelling, careers, and sporting opportunities he took part in and encouraged students to have a go.
We are immensely proud of Ejiro who embodies our school’s GREAT values and grateful that he took the time to talk to Y11 and even to pop in the library to catch up with Ms Walker and in Ms Calvert Spanish lesson where he got a lovely round of applause from Year 10!
Thank you to Ms Kendrick from Colfe’s for her continuing support and time. If you have any questions regarding applying for a scholarship, get in touch with Ms Nembhard at cnembhard@deptfordgreen.co.uk
Key dates for applying for a Colfe’s sixth form scholarship:
Thursday 10th October – 6th Form Open Evening
Deadline to submit the online application form: 13th November. Please note that you do not have to pay the admin fee if you are applying for the Leathersellers scholarship.
Friday 22nd November- 6th Form Entrance Exam: choice of Maths or Essay
Ms Calvert has asked that this be included and that as many students take part in this as possible...
'We take our surroundings for granted and sometimes forget that people in different parts of the world have a completely different outlook.
This easy and engaging project, sharing views of your school playground, is a great one to get you started if you're new to international partnerships. Give it a go and open your students' eyes to the world beyond your classroom'. For further information, please click here
Y8 SCIENCE
Y8's are enjoying their science experience. The task was to identify the properties of metals and non-metals. The materials used were not labelled as metal or non-metal. You'd think it would be obvious which is which, however some students asked if bacofoil was a metal and if copper was a metal.
Okay! The confusion continued. "What does malleable and ductile mean?" most of the students asked. After a thorough investigation, everything became clear and eventually they all learnt the answers.
As their teacher, I hope this knowledge remains with them for the rest of their lives!
Mr Ramsay
From Ms Tumkevice:
I have an incredible opportunity to volunteer in a school in Tanzania during the two-week October half-term.
Many children in Tanzania face tremendous challenges in their education and your support will help me to purchase educational supplies and contribute to community initiatives. Please use this link to make donations however small - https://gogetfunding.com/teaching-in-tanzania-2/ and read more about the campaign". Thank you...
