As we hurtle into the last month of the academic year, I am once again delighted to be sharing with you so much good news from the past two weeks. The highlight has been seeing the huge smiles on so many of our students' faces during thewonderful Dream Days last week. A big thank you has to go out to Mr Paish and Ms Nembhard for their highly efficient and meticulous planning skills which enabled every student to attend an exciting and engaging visit, from designing a Dream City at Ravensbourne University, to exploring creative approaches to science at the Science Museum.
Y11’s stunned us all with their beautiful outfits and camaraderie at the Prom boat party. What a lovely year group they are! I would like to take this opportunity to wish them all the best in the next step of their learning journey and to let them know they will be missed.
The Y10’s have certainly stepped up and made an excellent start to the PPE’s and have tackled these exams with commitment and maturity. Also, well done to those who went on the Duke of Edinburgh trip and to the wonderful staff who took them there!
Thank you once again to those of you who took the time to complete the parent survey. Your views are incredibly important to us. We have taken on this feedback when considering the whole-school priorities for next year. Ms Stanghon will be writing to you in the next few weeks to share a ‘You said, we did’ document outlining exactly what impact your feedback has had.
We have received a large number of holiday requests during term time. I would like to remind you that holidays should NOT be taken in term time, and these will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances whereby evidence is supplied to support this. It is key that your child’s attendance remains above 96% during the final 4 weeks of the year.
I hope to see many of you at the upcoming events during the rest of this school year. This week we are excited to watch our Y9's graduate. We have the school show 'School of Rock' and GCSE private view to look forward to alongside a wonderful celebration on the last day of the term for staff to show their appreciation to Lynn Ascott, our amazing attendance officer who is retiring after decades of service to Deptford Green. We shall all miss her greatly. If parents/carers would like to send Ms Ascott any goodwill messages as she leaves us, please email: acoffey@deptfordgreen.co.uk and Ms Coffey will collate the messages and ensure they are passed on to her.
Have a fabulous week everyone
Emma Thurston

Trip to the Goldsmiths Art Degree Show
Ms Austin-Burdett says:
All the students were very engaged and responded well to the artwork and conversed eloquently with the degree students who showed them around the degree show. The work on display varied from painting and drawing to installations and performance, displayed in various venues across the Goldsmiths campus. The spaces the art students work in range from a church to an old swimming baths all repurposed into art studios. Goldsmiths degree students are encouraged to work across a range of mediums and techniques in order to fully explore their potential and find their best working practises. It was a jot to celebrate the work of the final year degree students and see the plethora of creativity on show!
Farida 10AU, said 'I saw some amazing and inspiring artwork and that the spaces at Goldsmiths were amazing!'
DUKE OF EDINBURGH BRONZE AWARD
Mr Stamp, Mr Melia and Ms MackNess took the Y10 students involved off on their adventures! Have a look at the fun they had! Congratulations to all of them for their hard work and commitment to achieving their award.
PROM
To our amazing and wonderful Y11's who will be sorely missed... here they are in all their finery!
We look forward to seeing them all again on results day in August and at our Celebration of Achievement event in October.
LEWISHAM SCHOOLS DEBATE EVENT AT ST MATTHEW ACADEMY
On Wednesday 19th June, Deptford Green Debating Team joined several other schools across Lewisham for the GREAT Lewisham Debate Competition.
These wonderful students were mainly led by Kareem Y10 who is a master debater! I asked Kareem what he thought of this team and he listed all their skills to me wonderfully and then encouraged them individually, giving them top tips! He knew a lot of other debaters from other schools and also a lot of the mayoral team who were there. It was pretty impressive watching him operate on the day. At one point he was walking around and thinking in his head of the proposal they had been given to debate, and after a few moments he dug out from his impressive brain, a quote from a 15th Century philosopher! I nearly fell on the floor! Apart from the fact that I feel like I was born in that century sometimes, he was 'bang on point' as the expression goes and was able to apply it successfully to their argument. Well done Kareem and also to every single one of them! I was pleased to get the chance to accompany them to St Matthew Academy but was very proud of them being DG students. They beat St Matthew Academy in their first head-to-head debate! I am not sure where they came in the overall rankings after that. They didn't win, but they were definitely our winners. Well done team and Mr Callaghan for joining us. Thank you also to St Matthew Academy for hosting such a fun and lively event.
LEWISHAM BOOK QUIZ 2024
On Friday 21st July, Deptford Green hosted this year's book quiz, the first in-person one since Covid. 5 other schools attended. We met in the Sports Hall as the Sybil Phoenix Hall is currently being used for PPE's. Each school brought 2 teams of 4 from Y7 & Y8 and this was a general quiz on different books, genres, titles and general book/reading topics.
Andrew Mohammed from Lewisham Libraries and his colleague Maddie MC'd the event excellently and kept all the students and librarians entertained! Thank you both! Andrew said:
'Congratulations to Bonus Pastor School for winning this year’s Lewisham Schools Book Quiz! It was great to be all back in the same room again and I had great fun'.
Sadly DG didn't win but nonetheless our teams were amazing and we had a LOT of fun. I went around the corner to say goodbye to the last of the teams, only to hear them all singing into the mic and dancing! Singing? Not sure it was actually singing - just making lots of noise! And when we got back to the library at the end of the day, the concept of losing seemed to have escaped them. Waaaaay too much laughter, so here are my amazing team of Library Losers! You are all brilliant!
Well done to all the teams that were involved. The cup will be ours next year!
SUMMER VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY
A REMINDER FOR STUDENTS TO GET INVOLVED IN RADIO LEWISHAM!
Exciting times! Young person led radio station Radio Lewisham is here!
We want it to be a platform for all young people in the borough to share their views and their talents.
Currently there are four ways young people and schools/ youth organisations can get involved:
Individual young people can sign up for training and create ideas for radio shows.
Young people and DJs can use the platform to share their pre-recorded music/ mixes/ shows.
Schools and youth organisations can create a show with their young people and share it on Radio Lewisham
Schools and youth organisations can share already recorded music, poetry, podcasts.
Young people can use the QR code on the image to register their interest, also on insta @radiolewisham / X @radiolewisham
Please let us know if you want to be involved and any other ideas you have, it is early days and we are keen to see how we can develop Radio Lewisham with young people and those who work with them in Lewisham.
Dear Parents/carers,
Please be aware of this website that signposts where the borough of Lewisham offers support to sanctuary seekers, refugees, people seeking asylum, people who have no source of public funds and anyone who is rebuilding their life in Lewisham.
