Y8 The Brilliant Club
Our Y8 Scholars started their ‘Brilliant Club’ journey this week. The topic they will be examining is ‘History- Windrush, Migration and Belonging in Modern Britain’.
They will take part in study seminars with Sonia, a Law and Philosophy PhD tutor, before writing their extended essay and ‘graduating’ at university in May. Look out for further updates in upcoming newsletters.
WEDNESDAY MEDIA CLUB IS BACK!
This term we are taking on the medium of photography with wonderful tutor and Ravensbourne graduate Nico Froehlich! Click HERE to see Nico's work.
Nico captures beautiful pictures of South London life and students were given a disposable camera to capture their local community.
It provoked many questions such as “Can I film TikTok’s on this?” and interesting reflections on what we should capture and document.
Student’s work will be exhibited at the Degree Show at Ravensbourne.
AND... IT'S A WRAP!
Year 10 students produced a live TV show when they visited Ravensbourne University
Working with undergraduates currently studying Broadcast Engineering, Digital Television Production and Editing and Postproduction at Ravensbourne in Greenwich, Deptford Green Year 10s worked in the TV and sound studios and the production control room with industry standard equipment.
Students clearly had a positive and insightful day:
“ I enjoyed working to create a game show. I learned to use the sound effects to bring it to life.”
“ I learned how to write a script for the presenter and how to work with a team to improve and develop the script after each rehearsal.”
“ I got to use the cameras. It was cool to see how they can move so smoothly, how you can raise them up and down to change the angle and zoom in and out. I loved it!”
“I learned to use the lighting equipment and used professional cameras.”
“ I enjoyed using the cameras, working in a team and talking to the university students. Being the show host was my favourite part! “
“ I wanted to try something new and surprisingly I enjoyed it.”
“I liked that the university trusted us to use such expensive but fun technology and enjoyed learning what goes on behind the scenes and the variety of courses that you can study at university.”
Well done to all students who took part and big shout out to Lucia in 10CA and Wahab in 10PR who displayed fantastic communication and leadership skills and a proactive attitude as the game show presenter and director.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY NEWS
The DT department are working on a project with The Royal Albert Hall and The Grimshaw foundation; the project is titled Performance, Architecture and Design. The project was launched at The Royal Albert Hall in November and is led by the Grimshaw Foundation.
Deptford Green are working with Anna Lapwood; she is head of music at Cambridge university and is famous for playing the organ and has over a million followers on TikTok. The photos show the second session, where we had Venetia Wolfenden and Hannah Bergstrand from Urban Learners. They were explaining how acoustic engineering is used in performance spaces to enhance the sound of music. Our students then designed and made prototypes of acoustic panels. This will lead into a larger project over the next two sessions.
Our students really enjoyed it and gave good feedback about the session.
Thank you Mr Curran.
DRAMA
TRIP TO SEE MRS DOUBTFIRE
“Euphegenia Doubtfire, Dear. I specialise in the education and entertainment of children”.
A little over 40 students, from across the year groups, joined the Drama Department on Tuesday night for a visit up west to see Mrs Doubtfire, the new musical storming the west end from the Shaftsbury Theatre. The Musical is based on the 1993 film starring Robin Williams, which is in turn based on the 1987 novel Madame Doubtfire by Anne Fine. The weather was bracing, but we were all wrapped up against the cold and ready for the treat we had in store.
The musical was fast paced and full of great original songs by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick (Chick Run, James and Giant Peach), it’s also very evocative of the film with many of the iconic moments, such as the cream cake in the face to hide Daniel’s true identity and of course the run by fruiting!
For all of the songs and dance routines, the jokes and the great one liners, at the heart of the musical is the sad decline of a marriage and the affects this has on everyone involved. Daniel often taking his marriage to Miranda for granted, Miranda with a burgeoning career in fashion, we are taken through the expectations and prejudices placed on parents by society at large.
Daniel becomes the formidable Doubtfire, a nanny with attitude, so that he can spend more time with his children, incognito, but in so doing, sees life through a new pair of eyes. In the updated version we see a new emphasis on Daniel’s brother, who helps to transform him into Doubtfire, who with his husband, by the end of the show, adopts a baby and we are reminded that families come in many different versions, all equally wonderful and compelling.
Revelations aside, the enduring love for one another, parents and children, is in the end the ties that bind. We leave the characters at the final curtain with a new sense of purpose and with a clear understanding that they belong, something we all relish!
Thank you Mr Heelbeck for the photo and organising the trip and to Mr Paish for this article.

SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATE
The Deptford Green School Council has been busy over the last half-term contributing to the school's wellness drive led by Ms. Pritchard. The councillors were asked to meet with their peers to give feedback on the breakfast food available in the canteen, the canteen environment and the school playground. The feedback from the council and their peers has led to positive improvements in the lunch queue and lots of ideas to make the playground more fun and inclusive for all, which we will now take to a meeting with our school senior leaders. If you have any issues or ideas to make Deptford Green greater, speak to your student council representatives!
Thank you Mr Callaghan...

MENTAL HEALTH WEEK: FEBRUARY 5-11TH 'MY VOICE MATTERS'
The theme for Mental Health week is 'My Voice Matters!' The idea is to think about how students can use their voices to create the changes they want to see, whether those changes are small or big, they are all important. It is also about using our voices to look after our mental health.
