‘The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams’
Eleanor Roosevelt
This quote sums up our week! Our first Dreams Week was an astounding success. It was a delight to welcome so many visitors, including parents & carers, members of the local community and some of our partners. The focus for the week was ‘I love Deptford’ The students fully immersed themselves in this theme with some incredible work. Check out our twitter account - click HERE to see more information.
The GCSE Art exhibition showcased high quality contemporary artworks, and the stars of the show were the tasty canapes cooked and served by our Y9 chefs. This powerhouse group also served up the most delicious French Toast and scrambled eggs to Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham last week. He was impressed with their cooking skills, Jamie Oliver eat your heart out!
Our Y11’s celebrated in style in their finest at the prom aboard a boat cruising along the Thames at sunset. I have heard there were some dance moves that wowed too - and that was just from Mr Conway!
Y10’s have worked hard to revise for their PPE’s with a few more to go next week. Please do read carefully the letter concerning the plans for Y10 next week - click HERE. You will all now know hopefully about the strike action taking place next week. As per my letter, work will be set online for students in Y7-9 and will be uploaded to Classcharts.
As you read this, a group of intrepid travellers will be hiking across the south coast as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. Huge thanks to Mr Stamp and the team for giving up their time during a precious weekend to offer this amazing experience to so many of our students. Watch out for the report in our next edition.
We have taken the decision to ask students NOT to wear face masks whilst inside the building. If your child has a medical condition that requires them to continue to do so, please contact their Head of Year to provide evidence of this.
There are only a few days to go now until the opening night of the whole school drama production 'Our House'. I do hope you have purchased your tickets and are ready to get your baggy trousers on! Book your tickets below! They are selling out fast...

DREAM DAYS ARE SIMPLY WOW!
HERE IS JUST A QUICK SNAPSHOT OF SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES THAT WENT ON OVER THE LAST 3 DAYS CULMINATING IN THE DREAM DAYS SHOWCASE. WATCH OUT IN THE NEXT EDITION FOR A FULLER REPORT AND MORE AMAZING PHOTOS...
'So this little trip of ours was....interesting to say the least! We were going around though we only visited (and interviewed) one of the local shops. The owner said to us:
'I have been working here for 16 years'. We responded with 'What makes this place special to you and why Deptford? David responded by saying he enjoys the kind of people who live in Deptford and what they do. He also stated that he bought the small market shop because it was available and he planned to make it into a family business. (Certainly the locals see it as that - people have been observed going into his shop in their PJ's and slippers!)
Even when customers came in, he stayed patient with us (that man's a true legend). Even though that was the only shop we visited, it was the highlight of our day!
When we were around the second or third shop we looked at, a cat/kitten came to us out of the blue - a playful little fluffy, adorable feline! It was extremely friendly towards me especially. Guess you could say it left us 'feel-line' good!
Thank you to Ramone who wrote this up and to Olara and Shelby for putting this together and making the most adorable mock up of the shop! (pictured above).
We invited David in to check out our work and to see his shop represented in our stories... Great to see him in the building!
Check out a selection of what else went on across the school. Simply amazing!

WHAT HAS PHYSICS EVER DONE FOR US ANYWAY?
We welcomed fantastic guests to Deptford Green today and it was great to catch up with Misha, Deptford Green Class of 2019, and now 2nd year of an undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences (Physical) at Homerton College, University of Cambridge.
Our guests had one thing in common: they all studied Physics and were ready to discuss how Physics could open a world of opportunities for young people at Deptford Green School.
They also included a Researcher in the Engineering department at Oxford University, a Doctor in Quantum Information Theory and Maths lecturer at Brunel University, a Systems Engineering student from Warwick University, an Optical Engineer at Snap Inc working on future AR devices and a Data scientist from the BBC.
We discussed how studying Physics could develop key transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving as well as a deeper understanding of the world around us and lead to rewarding and impactful careers.
Students remarked “I thought Physics would not really be for me and there isn’t much you can do with it but now I think I am going to look into it more. Talking to the guests made me understand that it might be difficult but with that can come big rewards and there are so many jobs that link to physics…way more than I ever knew!”
“It was good, I had never thought how different jobs use Physics…some of the jobs I had never even thought about, so it has given me a different perspective and options to think about for next year.”
Thanks to our guests and to Tara from Future First for spending the morning with us.
“I really enjoyed facilitating the workshop …students were engaged and motivated and I hope they found it to be a valuable experience.”
We certainly did! Well done to all students who attended! You are GREAT!
SPOTLIGHT ON Y10 WORK EXPERIENCE
LOREDANA @ FOUNTAIN COURT LAW CHAMBERS!
“I believe that no other work experience would have been more enjoyable than working in one of the most prominent commercial chambers in the UK! Not only did they make sure I felt comfortable and welcomed, but they ensured I was experiencing what I want to do in the future. Throughout the week I worked across the chambers with the Junior Clerk’s Team, finance, IT and with the wonderful pupillage and library coordinator.
I wasn't expecting to have the chance to work with any of the barristers, however I had the opportunity to go to both The Royal Courts of Justice and the Rolls Building whilst shadowing the Junior Clerks. I also got to sit in a hearing and meet with a QC and talk about her experiences throughout her career.
If I were given the opportunity to go back and change my work experience placement, I wouldn't change a thing. It was the best week of my life and I learnt lots of behind-the-scenes facts that were extremely different to what we see in the movies and I would never have believed were real. Thank you to everyone at Fountain Court!”
Thank you for writing this Loredana.
Loredana looked the part every day (and sent daily updates! :)
THANK YOU MS NEMBHARD
Can you guess where these two Year 10 students went during work experience? Watch this space for more news soon!
If you are an employer or own your own business and can offer work experience placements for May 2024, please get in touch with Ms Nembhard: cnembhard@deptfordgreen.co.uk
Sean had a great week learning about conservation, we are very proud of him. He wrote a blog about his experience which Creekside Centre shared on their website: click HERE
Ms Thurston popped in to see Esme when she was doing her work experience in May where she was working with Making Pictures Photography Company. Esme was professional, and reliable, working hard and getting the job done! Well done Esme….
REFUGEE WEEK 19TH - 25TH JUNE 2023
Earlier this year, students in Y10 Photography participated in a project where they produced a visual response to the book ‘When Shadows Fall’ by Sita Brahmachari and Natalie Sirett.
Students then met the author and illustrator at The Migration Museum in Lewisham and took part in workshops with Sita and Natalie and musician Love Ssega. Click HERE
Some of the art produced at the Migration Museum workshops was included in a digital exhibition for Refugee Week. To view it, click HERE

Y8 Brilliant Club
THE START OF THEIR JOURNEY...
On one of the frostiest mornings of the year, back in January, the Year 8 Brilliant Club Scholars made an early start to visit Emmanuel College in Cambridge.
During an academic skills lecture, scholars were encouraged to critically evaluate and discuss different sources on the role of the United Nations and were also reminded of some useful revision techniques.
They were then treated to an impressive lunch, before a tour of the college which was founded in 1584. The ponds, courts, ancient trees, and sculptures dotted around the lawns looked beautiful in the winter sun.
The day concluded with an information session about the pros and cons of going to university, how to apply and how to best prepare for it.
It was a great day and Year 8 were, of course, BRILLIANT!
The Brilliant Club scholars have now started their weekly tutorials with Liliana (Phd from University of Leeds), and they will be writing 1500 words essay on the theme of Gender and Peace.
We look forward to following their progress and to their graduation!
AND NOW THEY GRADUATE...
The programme kicked off with students visiting Cambridge. They then took part in academic seminars on the topic of 'Peace and Gender' with a Law lecturer from Leeds University.
After writing a university level 1500 words essay, scholars attended City University for their graduation.
Left to right they are:
Lara, Ariadna, Philipa, Dillon, Raya, Daphne, Sophie, Ella, Thomas, Elliot, Fred, Harris, Jojo, Kate and Katia
We are immensely proud of all our scholars’ hard work and commitment, they have developed their academic writing and critical thinking, their LORIC Skills and demonstrated GREAT Values.
We would particularly like to commend Lara who volunteered to address the graduation audience and talked eloquently about resilience, encouraging all to push through and not give up when things get difficult. Well done!
Lara and Philippa - what a fantastic photo! We are so proud of our amazing students!
Y9 and Y10 ENVISION TEAMS
In May, our Year 9 and Year 10 Envision Teams concluded the programme by presenting their project and the skills they had developed to an audience of over 100 people.
On the train, students were slightly nervous but fully focused on rehearsing their presentation.
When we arrived at the Nuveen’s offices in The City, there was a sense of anticipation amongst our students as there were 5 different schools taking part plus all the business mentors and other guests so it was a lot to face!
Our Y9 team ran through their presentation with their mentors at Baily Garner, a construction consultancy company, and got invaluable coaching on public speaking.
In the meantime, mentors from Nuveen and Glennmont Partners, a company that invests in infrastructure power generation such as solar and wind farms, biomass power stations and hydro power plants, were putting the Y10 team through their paces, practising answers to potential judges’ questions.
Deptford Green's two teams were first to present their project. They had chosen to talk about mental health, inclusivity and the environment. They were passionate about their topic and managed to inject humour and gain audience participation and beautifully articulated the skills they had developed and demonstrated our GREAT Values perfectly. They should all be very proud of their development and achievements.
“I am proud to have been able to show off my skills and abilities and to work well with others to find solutions to a problem”
“ My highlight of the programme was meeting new people and working with Baily Garner and planning the garden”
Their mentors were beaming with pride too and are looking forward to continuing working with Deptford Green in the future.

EMPOWERMENT LONDON FILM CLUB
Some of our Y9 and Y10 students attended a camera masterclass with professionals from blockbuster films’ camera departments.
We learnt about the different roles in a camera department, then students tried out a variety of tasks linked to each role and had many interesting questions. We are proud of our students’ commitment to attending the sessions after school and we are looking forward to the next masterclasses and to students making their own film!
Thank you to Empowerment London and St Matthew Academy for making this possible.
Empowerment London is a collective of young Black Creatives committed to developing access to the Creative Industries and we are delighted to be participating in this project.

YEAR 9 ENVISION PEACE GARDEN
Volunteers from Baily Garner came back to school this week to work with the Y9 Envision Team and get their garden underway. Working together, we cleared a patch in the playground and planted a variety of flowers and shrubs supplied by Baily Garner.
Students and volunteers also enjoyed building a planter from recycled wood to plant herbs, it is looking and smelling wonderful! Students did a fantastic job and want to develop a sensory and calm garden space where students and staff can sit to reflect and contemplate.
We would like to thank everyone at Baily Garner for the support and are looking forward to growing the garden together.
If anyone would like to donate plants, garden decorations, compost and wood chips or gravel for the path, get in touch at cnembhard@deptfordgreen.co.uk
WHAT'S COMING UP?
YOUNG VOLUNTEER: RESEARCH AND PHOTOGRAPHY 10 DAY PLACEMENT @ THE HORNIMAN MUSEUM
Are you aged 15-19 and want to take part in a summer holiday placement at The Horniman? This will be great for your CV/college applications. The closing date for applications is this coming Monday 3rd July.
Details: We are looking for 3 young volunteers, aged 15-19,
to carry out this role involving our Handling Collection over the summer break.
WHO ARE WE?
The Horniman Museum and Gardens in Forest Hill, South East London, has been popular with visitors of all ages for over 100 years.
Our Museum has incredible collections from around the world, including stuffed animals (like our famous walrus), and objects made and used by people, from thousands of years ago up to today. We also have an aquarium, butterfly house, Animal Walk and beautiful Gardens.
We care deeply about the planet and its people, and work to shape a positive future for the world we all share.
WHICH TEAM WILL I BE SUPPORTING?
You will be volunteering with the Formal Learning Team. We support visits from tens of thousands of school, home educated, college and university students every year.
We care for a unique collection of 3,500 objects, called the ‘Handling Collection’ that we use in all our learning programmes. These objects mirror the objects in the Museum’s main collection, but can be handled rather than being kept behind glass!
WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
This role will involve handling Museum objects, and developing research and Museum documentation skills. It will be an opportunity to get a better understanding of how Museums work, and to get a taste of what a career in Museums might be like.
We will ask you to select a group of objects to research, photograph and document. These objects could linked to your own interests or culture, or could be completely new to you. You can research any number of things about the objects you pick: from facts about natural world, to the traditional use of objects made and used by people… you decide what you’d like to find out more about.
We will support you to plan and structure your research, and suggest places to find that information… or you may have your own ideas that you’d like to explore!
You will learn and apply Museum documentation skills: including photographing and marking (writing numbers on) objects, and using a database to record and update information.
HOW MUCH TIME IS INVOLVED?
We are looking for young people who can volunteer for 10 days (or 60 hours) over the summer holidays, from July 24th- September 1st 2023. You can chose which days you would like to volunteer, however they do need to be week days.
IS THIS FOR ME?
This role would suit someone who is:
Aged 15-19
Interested in history, geography, science, art and design, photography and/or finding out more about places and people across the world
Good at motivating themselves to work independently
Keen to learn more about Museum careers, or how Museums work
What will I get in return?
Loads of new skills that will be great for your CV and/or Personal Statement
Experience in a workplace, and opportunity to talk to Museum staff about their careers
Reimbursement of travel expenses within Greater London
Free lunch and snacks
Free entry to paid areas of the Museum over summer
A free ticket to two of our paid areas for up to 4 of your family or friends
HOW DO I APPLY?
Please complete the questions on this online form - click HERE if you would like to apply for the opportunity. The closing date is Monday 3rd July at 5pm.
We will get in touch with everyone who has applied by email on Friday 7th July.
WHY IS THIS ROLE RESTRICTED TO PEOPLE AGED 15-19?
This role is intended as an extension to our careers development work with targeted local education providers and are therefore only open to applicants aged 15-19. A range of volunteering roles open to applicants aged 18+ are listed on the Horniman website.
CALLING Y9, Y10 & Y11: THE LITMUS CREATIVE WRITING PROJECT FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE
ARE YOU A WRITER? DO YOU WANT TO WRITE? If YES: good. Continue reading this message.
Are you a student in year 9, 10 or 11 and interested in writing – fiction, or non-fiction, or poetry, or graphic novel writing, or blog writing, or in writing and storytelling in any shape or form you want?
If NO, then this invite isn’t for you. Pass it on to someone who wants to write and would like to be published.
What comes into your head when you hear or read or think about the phrase over the border?
What are borders for? Do they exist so that we can cross them? Or are they for stopping people (and things) crossing, at least without being checked and monitored – and if so, why is that?
Who gets to cross them and who doesn’t?
Why do we have borders? Do they decide where a country begins and ends? Why are borders almost always contentious? Why, right now, do they seem more contentious than ever? And are they dividing lines or are they thresholds?
In human history borders and thresholds have long been understood to be places charged with great energy, even magic, which is why people used to get married standing on the thresholds of houses or churches.
What if, instead of thinking a border meant the place where something ends and divides, we thought of borders as places where two different things come together and something bigger, something more, comes about because of this meeting?
The Litmus is a writing initiative for UK-wide school students. We’re looking for student writing or artwork of any and every sort, and this year we’re inviting submissions up to 500 words which consider the phrase over the border in any way you like.
Make something of it. Send us what you write or make, we’ll publish it in our online magazine. We’ll also publish our favourite pieces in book form at the end of the school year. You’ll become part of a writing collective like no other, a collective that will act as a touchstone for readers interested in what your generation is doing, thinking and writing right now.
Write about what over the border means to you. We’ll be proud to publish what you write.
Be part of The Litmus.
Ali Smith
Entry is free and open to UK students currently studying at a non-fee-paying UK school or attend a fee paying school on a full scholarship.
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS 28TH JULY 2023. However, submissions will be reviewed and published online as they are received, so we encourage you to submit early.
We are really starting to get going now with this group - it's exciting watching it come together. We are very grateful to Paula Flack who has been invaluable in helping get this off the ground - thank you Paula!
Firstly a HUGE shout-out to those parents/carers who have supported us so far. A prime example of this are those parents who helped us make Music MAYhem such a roaring success... we couldn't have done it without you! Plus over the years we have had some truly amazing supportive parents and we will always remain grateful for your help. You know who you are...
When the incoming Y7 parents came in to meet us this term, MANY people expressed an interest in joining our PTA. A key thing about being part of it is that you can continue being involved in, and aware of, school life which commonly parents lose when the transition between primary and secondary happens so by joining this group, you will maintain some of that connection and hopefully form new friendships with other parents in our school.
Formal Roles
We will have the formal roles of a Chair, a Treasurer and a Secretary. These will eventually be voted in, but currently we have an acting chair who is doing a wonderful job.
We also will need volunteers for the following roles:
Additional Support Roles:
Event Bar team management Parent meet up evenings - Social Group (Optional) - coordinator Second Hand Uniform Sales coordinator Estate Agent Boards coordinator WhatsApp Groups/Website/Facebook Coordinators (for each year group)
We are about to register the group as a charity and if you are interested in getting involved, please email: twalker@deptfordgreen.co.uk
Thank you. We look forward to working with you! We also look forward to seeing you at our fundraising coffee morning on the 14th July (see above to book your place). Have a brilliant weekend....
PHOTOGRAPHIC PERMISSIONS FOR STUDENTS
There have been several events where it has been impossible to put your child's photograph in the newsletter to celebrate their amazing achievements because we don't have permission from you to publish.
For example; the Y7 Graduation event a couple of weeks ago... where we take whole groups of students, we need to ensure that we have your permission as parents or legal guardians before putting those photos in our newsletter, on our website or in any publication or promotional material. We appreciate it is totally your right to say yes or no but where no response has been given either way, it means we cannot publish until we are sure. Where they are in a big group, it becomes even more problematic and sometimes it is easier not to publish because it is so time-consuming. It is possible to 'blur' faces but again, we have to establish the name of each student and then edit the group photo.
Please look out for emails from us asking you to let us know if you are giving us permission as we are updating our lists currently. We understand there may be a serious safeguarding reason you do not wish your child's photo to appear and we totally respect that, but please let us know so that we can follow the guidelines but also publish as many photos of your loved ones as possible for you to enjoy. In the next edition I will be putting in the Y7 Graduation group photos as promised. Also, as many Y11 Prom photos as possible.
Thank you.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
This is the sad journey some of the school uniform makes at Deptford Green!.
With the cost of living crisis as it is, and with uniform not being cheap to buy, we are thinking of YOU when we say, PLEASE put your child's name on their uniform! Whilst it will be yet another thing to buy and to do, the money it will save you should make up for it in the long run!
Thank you!
PARENTS: WE NEED YOUR HELP PLEASE
To our local community: are you refurbishing your kitchen / upgrading your capsule coffee machine? We are looking to source 2 working capsule coffee machines for our hardworking staff to enjoy whenever they get the chance!
If you are able to donate a machine or contribute towards the cost of one, please get in touch. GCourtney@deptfordgreen.co.uk Thanks so much!
ATTENDANCE: MS STANGHON
RAISE YOUR ATTENDANCE - IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES!
What does good attendance mean? How does good attendance improve your chances?
Good attendance is important and impacts both personal and academic progress.
CASE STUDY: Simone is in Year 8 and her current attendance is 90%. Simone thinks this is pretty good and so do her parents but are they right?
90% attendance =½ day missed every week!!
No employer or college would want you to be absent this much - that’s practically part-time!
LET'S LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER...
1 school year at 90% attendance =4 whole weeks of lessons missed. 90% or below means Simone is a ‘persistent absentee’
WHAT IMPACT MIGHT THIS HAVE ON SIMONE'S LIFE?
90% attendance over 5 years of secondary school = 1/2 a school year missed.
Research suggests that 17 MISSED SCHOOL DAYS a year = GCSE grade DROP in achievement. (DfES)
The better the attendance the greater the achievement.
SUPPORT FOR PERSISTENT ABSENTEES @ DG
At DGS if your attendance is 90% or below we will do everything we can to support you to improve:
•Write to inform your parents/carers. This letter will be kept on your school file.
•Set up weekly meetings/support sessions/interventions with your Pastoral Leader.
•Invite your Parent/Carers in for attendance meetings.
•Inform the Local Authority of the work we are doing with you and your parent/carer to ensure your attendance improves.
WHAT CAN I DO TO ENSURE MY ATTENDANCE IS GOOD?
•Get 8-10 hours sleep every night –lateness/tiredness to school also impacts your attendance.
•Ensure you have high standards of personal hygiene -regular hand washing and cleaning lowers the risk of infections.
•Aim for one hour a day of physical activity each day– exercise reduces the risk of disease, manages weight, strengthens bones, keeps you healthy.
•Have a balanced diet- you need nutrients for growth and repair and prevent diet related illnesses.
•Reach out for help if you need it- support can be provided for any issue you may be experiencing which is affecting your attendance. Be brave and tell someone in school and they will support you to overcome the issues.
•Tell your parents/carers not to book appointments or holidays in term time.
FINAL REMINDERS: RAISE YOUR ATTENDANCE TO IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES
Good attendance and punctuality = better academic and personal achievement. (Department for Education and Skills)
Please ensure your attendance is 96-100% in order to achieve your full potential. Ask for support from your tutor or Pastoral Leader if you need additional support to improve. We are here to help!
