ART & TEXTILES
Y9 TRIP TO LONDON COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATIONS
Last week a group of Y9 art students took part in printing workshops at London College of Communications. Half the group focused on screen printing while the other half experimented with mono printing. Both groups explored these techniques from start to finish building on processes they already knew and learning new ones along the way. The screen printers realised that patterns and simple shapes with layering, delivered exciting and colourful designs. Alternatively, the mono printers explored illustrative ideas and were able to create beautiful pieces which developed their drawing skills. Both groups outcomes were fantastic and individual.
The students said they wished they could have been there all day and look forward to exploring these techniques again in the future! A big thank you to everyone at LCC for providing such a wonderful experience for our students; we hope to visit again very soon!
YEAR 11 TEXTILES VISIT TO THE NOW GALLERY
The year 11 textiles group explored a large-scale installation by Matty Bovan at the Now Gallery in North Greenwich on 8th February 2023.
Bovan is a UK based fashion designer who specialises in knitwear and his exhibition showcases floor to ceiling knitted structures made out of ribbons.
Whilst there, the students interacted with the artwork, climbing inside the main structure, adding their own ribbons and creating their own colourful drawings of the designers work. They also had a go at knitting their own miniature artworks which will be included in their GCSE exam project. This colourful, vibrant installation has inspired many ideas in the students, from painting to creating moving images. They are excited to explore more designers techniques after the half term. We can't wait to see what they come up with!
LGBTQIA+ HISTORY MONTH HAS NOW COME TO A CLOSE...
It seems to me that as the years pass by and the world moves on, the plight of queer people around the world remains. During History Month we heard about the murder of trans teen Brianna Ghey in Warrington. This will be devastating for her family and friends, but the murder also rings loudly with the LGBTQIA+ Community. How do we stay safe? How do we keep each other safe? How do we foster a more understanding society?
During the month in school, we had an assembly that explored the concept of solidarity and the flags that represent the many LGBTQIA+ people around the world. We also looked at the theme of 'Behind the Lens', showcasing a number of queer producers, writers and executives in the film industry.
Our Equality Ambassador’s message was clear: LGBTQIA+ people are in all areas of life. They might be the person who serves you in a shop, the soldier who fights for your liberties and freedoms, the person you sit next to in class, your bus driver, the person who designed your clothes, the architect who built the school or your favourite teacher. Allyship has never been more important and that was obvious on Saturday morning this past weekend when hundreds of allies turned up at the Honor Oak Pub in a counter-protest against members of the far right who were going to protest about a drag storytelling event for children.
Our Equality Ambassadors attended an LGBTQIA+ event at the Town Hall on Friday where we were shown a timeline of Queer History and the lived experience. It was fascinating to see how the laws have changed over the years in the UK to support queer people, but also how there is always a pull in the opposite direction from some groups and sentiments. Our students were also able to engage with some creative writing and badge making which was excellent. We have also planned some Peer Mentor training with the Young Mayor’s Team so that we can strengthen our message around equality and hopefully visit some of our local primary schools.
At the end of an excellent day last Friday, I met with the Ambassadors and we discussed what we might do next to support with International Women’s Day, Our feelings were clear and shared: you cannot pick and choose your equalities. Equality at Deptford Green is GREAT.
Thank you Mr Paish
HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE
Health & Social Care visit to London South Bank University Hospital
On Monday the 30th of January, our Y11 Health and Social Care class went on a trip to London South Bank University in West Croydon. Once there we were taken to a Simulation Room. In the room there was an activity we were invited to take part in where a simulation doll was our ‘patient’ and we could immediately hear that she was breathing quite heavily. We were told that the patient had had an Asthma attack and we had to help her. We went through different steps to help the patient; different students performed different stages in her care. For example, Crissan helped the patient by putting the oxygen mask over her mouth and nose so that she could breathe better. Another student also learnt how to count along with the patient’s pulse to determine the beats per minute. We also helped the patient by monitoring her pulse and temperature. After that we went to another activity where we wore a glove that had an electrical current running through it. It caused our hand to shake uncontrollably and made our hands cramp and this made it difficult to do daily tasks such as pouring water in a cup and buttoning up a shirt. The thinking behind this was to help us empathise with patients who may have illnesses such as Parkinson’s Disease. We also wore glasses that made us visually impaired with headphones that blocked out background noises to experience hearing impairment. The overall consequence of this was that it made us feel vulnerable and gave us a lack of mobility.
There was also an inflated suit that made us obese. Whilst I was wearing the inflated suit, I had to do daily tasks such as putting clothes on, getting in and out of bed and generally moving around and I found I struggled with doing the basic tasks. One of our other activities, was to try on this heavily weighted suit which was wrapped around our bodies. This made it extremely difficult to move around quickly and gave us an experience of what's it's like to be elderly.
Thank you Nhi for writing the report up for us.
Here are some quotes from some of the other students about the day:
“It was a very interesting experience that gave us an insight into what it is like to live with certain conditions and why it is important to have empathy when you work in Healthcare.”
“I don’t have words to describe something better. I really loved visiting the simulation ward today.”
“It gave me ideas about what I could study at university and I will definitely visit the university again.”
BUSINESS
CANDLE SALES AT Y9 & Y8 PARENTS EVENINGS
The Y10 Business & Enterprise group were busy selling more candles at the Y9 Parents Evening. They also sold at the Y8 Parents Evening this week and are developing into highly successful sales people and employing ever-improving sales techniques as they go along. A true learning experience.
Well done to Felix, Michael and Arlo. Excellent DG Entrepreneurs!
GEOGRAPHY: Rainforest Experience Comes to DG
Year 8 and 10 geographers have been investigating environments across the world and what's better to bring this topic alive than experiencing the animals and their adaptations. Learners received a micro lecture and got to pick up and engage with the animals. Our learners embraced their fears by picking up snakes, cockroaches and lizards. Learners faces showed their excitement and all the students who took part represented our school with excellence.
The experience leader Hazel, was overwhelmed with our learner’s knowledge on animals and commented on how exceptional their behaviour was. All the animals are accounted for and none seem to have escaped! Click HERE to see some more photographs.
Thank you Mr Stamp
ALL THINGS READING
At the moment we have a couple of Reading Competitions going on around World Book Day and Reading Week.
Thomas in Y8 has taken up Ms Player's challenge to make a bookmark to celebrate a book or book series he likes and Thomas loves Manga! Well done Thomas, this is a FANTASTIC effort!
We also have our Inter-Class Challenge in Y7 & Y8 well underway. Competition for a Pizza Lunch is fierce and it remains to be seen who will win this luxury! The idea is that you read as many 'quick reads' and quiz immediately to see how many quizzes in Accelerated Reader you can accumulate. This is great practice for concentrated reading and there will also be a story read to them over the course of the half-term. Students can still continue to read their own choice books and when finished, take a quiz on that too where there is a quiz. There are lots of different ways to earn points! Watch this space and we will announce the winning class at the end of the term.
Pupils have been really well engaged in this competition so far. Well done to those really taking it on board and taking up the challenge! All good practice and strengthening your reading ability.
GUESS THE TEACHER COMPETITION
Tutor groups have been sent a competition to see if they can guess the Reading Teacher. Can you guess who this sporty person is?
DRAMA
Students enjoyed a magical day at 'Harry Potter and The Cursed Child'.
Perplexed by the special effects, DG students left ultimately believing that magic is real as long as you believe in it... Two great performances; thank you to Sita for offering us the opportunity for free tickets. Click HERE for more photos

YEAR 9 MENTORING WITH UCL AND 'WITH INSIGHT EDUCATION'
The conversation was flowing yesterday when our Y9 ‘With Insight’ Mentees met their mentors for the first time.
“She was so nice; I didn’t think it would be so easy to talk to her.”
“We talked about my GCSE choices and it was really helpful.”
“She is studying to be a Doctor and I might want to do that.”
Students in Y9 have been matched to students at University College London, one of the top universities in the world. They will be meeting online weekly to discuss their aspirations so they can make informed decisions for the future. They will also get tips and advice regarding academic skills, extra-curricular activities and well-being so they are prepared to access more opportunities. Students will then meet their mentor on campus and tour the university.
With Insight Education’ is an organisation who aims to empower, enable and equip black heritage students to successfully apply to top universities and progress into professional careers.
YEAR 10 FUTURES MORNING THURSDAY 23RD FEBRUARY
There was a buzz of excitement in school when over 45 volunteers from the world of work came in to conduct 'mock interviews' and Networking sessions with Y10 students.
The day started with an interview skills workshop where students learnt about using the 'STAR' technique which they then put into practice in their mock interview. They received constructive feedback to implement.
Students also took part in a networking session, further practicing their communication skills and learning more about what different professionals do at work.
✅ "I'm so proud of myself"
✅ "It was fun, I loved it!"
✅ "It was helpful and enjoyable because I met people who work in the job I want to do and I learned about other jobs in Technology. We met people who worked at Google and people who worked in different Tech companies. I definitely want to be a Software Engineer!”
✅ "The people who interviewed me were so nice and I was so happy with their feedback. It made me feel good about myself."
✅ "I was really nervous and didn't think I could do it but now I realise that it is not something to be worried about and it is probably the same for most things you are afraid of...they are not that bad!"
✅ "I got great advice about using the STAR technique and I know how I can improve my answers to interview questions. It was very useful."
✅ "It helped me feel more confident about the future"
We also welcomed Fiona Taylor and Charlie Clark from London South Bank University to learn more about apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships and explored jobs in the Creative Industries and courses with Juliet Alexander from The London Screen Academy, for students who might be interested in training to access roles in Film, TV and Media.
Our guests enjoyed meeting our Y10 students and it was brilliant to have a mix of Alumni, parents and other employers meeting students. Thank you to all the volunteers who spent time with us and nurtured our students.
“Thank you for inviting me to present to your Year 10 students today as part of their Futures Day. It was a real pleasure to spend time with students at Deptford Green School. Your students were attentive, polite and asked intelligent questions about the creative industries, LSA courses and Post 16 options, including apprenticeships. They had a keen interest in the courses on offer at the London Screen Academy and we look forward to welcoming them here in the future.” Juliet Alexander from London Screen Academy
Thank you Ms Nembhard
