WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT SCHOOL?

OUR SCHOOL CAPTAINS ARE AMAZING! #WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!

These are an amazing group of young people. They wear their Captains ties with pride. Every day they do our school proud, helping with duties on corridors, offering to help teachers in lessons and in the library. Their manners are exemplary and they lead by example. On Wednesday 18th the majority of them were helping Y10 Parents at the Parents Evening. They are involved in different areas of school life including Mental Health Ambassadors, Eco Warriors and Restorative Peer Mentors to name but a few!

Some of them have also been Reading Mentors with Y7 & 8's and the majority of them have taken part in the Duke Of Edinburgh Awards.

Last week four of them made an excellent presentation to the Senior Leadership Team. High on their agenda is to take action to develop and improve community work, to become an eco-school and to focus on improving mental health. They then gave presentations in all the year group assemblies across the week. Well done to Anouk, Loki, Maria and Misha!

GAMING CLUB WITH MS CALVERT

Gaming club was attended by over 30 of our students this week who enjoyed competing against each other and showing their gaming skills! Gaming club is every Thursday during the 7/9/11 lunchtime in 304.

D&D CLUB WITH MS CALVERT

This week, Thomas in Y8 kicked off our first DG Dungeons and Dragons club's quest! D&D club is every Monday after school in 304. All adventurers welcome!

Y8 GIRLS FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

Millwall Schools' Tournament

We are so proud of our Y8 girls football team who beat every school in Lewisham to get to the final last week at the Millwall schools’ tournament.

The ladies lost 1-O in the final to a team they’d already beaten in the first round! Very frustrating for them, but they were outstanding in terms of togetherness, communication, teamwork and leadership.

Well done girls!

Y10 BOYS FOOTBALL - EXCELLENT WIN FOR THE BLACKHEATH CUP. WELL DONE BOYS!

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!

Our Basketball Team have taken part in 2 rounds and have won all their matches and are now crowned Lewisham Youth Games KS4 Champions!

They now progress to the London Youth Games against the winners of Greenwich Borough so all being well, there will be even more good results coming our way! Yumaani y11 who is the captain was sadly injured and is not in the photograph but will be with them for the next game all being well.

Y11 FOOTBALL SUCCESS

Mr Walker's Y11 football team progress into the next round of the Blackheath Cup after beating Woolwich Polytechnic on penalties after an exciting 3-3 draw. Goalkeeper Finn picked up the game's Man of the Match award for not conceding a single penalty!

ART CLUB

YEAR 9 WORKING HARD TOWARDS THEIR GRADUATION

Year 9 have been going around to various staff completing tasks in order to get their graduation cards signed off ready for their Graduation Event. There have been some really great contributions! Well done Y9!

42nd ANNIVERSARY OF THE NEW CROSS FIRE

On the 18th January our Equality Ambassadors attended an event led by The Phoenix Academy in Fordham Park at the site of the memorial stone.

It is the 42nd anniversary of the New Cross Fire in which 13 young black people aged between 14 and 22 lost their lives, and one survivor took his own life two years later.

AUTUMN TERM READING CHALLENGE COMES TO AN END WITH SOME AMAZING RESULTS!

Lots of our Y7 & 8 readers were reading away in the last 4 weeks of the Autumn Term and on Monday 16th, Year 7's were awarded with their promised LORICs and certificates. Our overall winner Zac read 25 books in the month and got himself 250 LORICs! Congratulations Zac. You truly are outstanding...

Y10 TRIP TO RAVENSBOURNE

On a textiles trip to Ravensbourne University we got to experience a great workshop which involved creating textiles using our creativity and fashion designing skills.

The first half of the workshop had the objective to create 5 textile samples relating to nature, contrast or freedom/restriction. We were encouraged to be abstract and use mixed media to create samples by sewing, twisting manipulating and wrapping the fabrics. Once we had produced our samples, we had to fashion our pieces to become outfits for models.

We first worked with the natural fabric but later printed photographs of our work to cut up and redesign as fashion. It was an enjoyable workshop that gave us insight into Fashion Design and Textiles work as well as a chance to tour the university.

YEAR 10 C0MMUNITY APPRENTICES

This week our Y10 Community Apprentice Team travelled to AXA in The City where they presented their project to an audience of business volunteers and other students from across Lewisham.

The judges panel highlighted their creativity and passion for the issue they had chosen to focus on. Their deep commitment to mental health was palpable and their business mentors at Glenmont Partners commented that working with the group over the twelve weeks has resulted in interesting conversations about mental health and well-being in the workplace.

We are very proud that Li’Ana in Y10WA was presented with a Jack Petchey achievement award. Well done Li’Ana! Her team’s words when read out to the audience triggered a ripple of emotional response across the audience and everyone was really touched.

“Li'Ana is committed to making a difference. From the very start, Liana has continued to put forward "great ideas" and she "has worked hard and always attempted to share her ideas, helping others and no matter what, she contributes trying to do or make of the situation whatever she can if she is struggling to understand it". This is a clear example of Li'Ana's determination and "her demonstrating resilience and supporting others". She is passionate about the social issue project and her team. Her peers applaud her for her bravery because "she is really open about her experiences and how her struggles have affected her". Li'Ana shows "bravery and always shares ideas with the rest of the group". She has "taken charge and showed great leadership skills". Li'Ana is thoughtful and her peers describe her as someone who "works hard" and "has never failed to explain things to me if I don't understand it". In this way, Li'Ana motivates her team and spreads kindness wherever she goes. She uses initiative, thinks ahead and is always helpful. She welcomes new challenges and opportunities outside of her comfort zone. Li'Ana updated her absent teammates and helped them feel organised and ready to pitch in week 6. She planned ahead and suggested sitting in groups to prepare for the pitch. This is a clear example of how integral Li’Ana is to the team and how she shows compassion towards others. “

BUSINESS

Year 10 Business (& Enterprise!) did REALLY well selling their Candles at the recent Y10 Parents Evening which was really well attended.

They completely SOLD OUT and have made over £100 and their persuasive sales patter went down well with the Parents who bought them! Obviously they have the gift of the gab and Mr Aniagwu has taught them well...

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS & CARERS

Dear Parents and Carers

We (LPCF) have several events coming up

We have been funded by Awards for All (The National Lottery) and Lewisham Local Authority to bring you our Winter Warm Hub to provide parents and carers of children with additional needs and disabilities a warm place to come once a week. We are limited to 25 people.

We will provide a hot meal or buffet every Monday from 10.30 to 2.30, together with refreshments, mindful activities (optional) and a chance to meet other parents and the team to have a chat.

Due to any demand, we will run a rota, but all are welcome, please see the flyer for more details and the menu for Monday 23^rd January. Don’t forget they will run every week except school holidays and bank holidays.

Lewisham Local Authority and Lewisham College are holding an information session about supported internships in Lewisham on 8 February 2023, at 1.30pm to 3pm at Reception, Lewisham College, Lewisham Way SE4 1UT. Please do arrive on time.

This session will be for 16-25 year olds with an Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan who are thinking about getting ready for the world of work.

Help to prepare for a supported internship
Information about supported internships at Lewisham College, Lewisham Council, Phoenix Community Housing and The Three C's.

Forest Hill Job Centre and benefits advice will also be available.
